In the 31st year of the Republic of China, a catastrophic famine swept northern Henan, leaving countless people on the brink of starvation. Young farmer Chen Mancang was mocked by villagers as a "henpecked husband". When the famine hit, he gave his last half of steamed bread to his wife Xiu Lian, only to be scolded for neglecting himself. Little did others know, Xiu Lian had a secret skill: pickling dried vegetables and improving coarse grains. Relying on the tacit understanding forged by their love, the couple secretly grew drought-resistant high-yield crops, survived the famine, then opened a grain shop. They rose from mocked poor couple to a well-respected prosperous pair, and even helped their fellow villagers through the hard times.
