Lin Xiaoman, an illustrator, has been in love with Gu Jingshen, an investment banker, for three years. Gu's "precise arrangements" are like a suffocating kite string—choosing her exhibition themes, picking her painting pigments, even vetting her WeChat moments replies. When Lin breaks up with him, saying "I've become your accessory," Gu finds her unfinished painting: a kite with a broken string spreading its wings in the clouds, captioned "The love I want is you daring to let go and watch me soar." Gu suddenly realizes his fear of loss has long become a bondage. On the final night, Gu shows up with a custom kite spool engraved with "You're the wind, I'm the string that follows you." Lin cries and hugs him—turns out the best love is learning to let go, yet still wanting to stand by your side.
