Lin Xiaoman, a down-and-out songwriter, has her demo plagiarized by top singer Su Wan into a yearly hit. Instead of fighting back against "fame-leeching" accusations, she waits until Su Wan wins the "Original Golden Melody Award"—then smiles and plays the original recording. The song hides her late mother's birthday code, and the arrangement's static comes from her mother's old recorder. "You can copy the melody, but not my memories with Mom," she says. Su Wan's "talented" persona crumbles instantly. Looking at her mother's photo in the audience, Lin sighs in relief: she never wanted an apology—just to keep her mother's trace from being erased by a plagiarist.
