Lin Wan, a modern corporate slave crushed by overtime, travels back to 1993 in a northeastern Chinese town when she touches her grandmother's old photo—she becomes 18-year-old "Lin Xiaowan," who dropped out of school to pay her family's usury debt. The factory abuse, debt collectors' harassment, and neighbors' cold stares almost break her—until she meets Chen Yan, a "rebel" forced by his father to work in a state-owned enterprise. He steals her stall goods on their first meeting but takes a stick for her when debt collectors surround her. Lin Wan uses modern ideas to sell celebrity posters and open a video store to rise from the bottom; Chen Yan helps her fight back against bullies. However, when she finds the woman in the old photo looks exactly like her, and Chen Yan has the same photo in his wallet, she realizes this time travel is not an accident—it's a 30-year journey to find her "flame."
