Lin Zheng, 40, was once a provincial table tennis prodigy who retired in despair due to a misjudgment and shoulder injury. Now he runs a sports equipment store, keeping his old training uniform at the bottom of a box. Until his 10-year-old daughter Xiaotang, trying to protect a bullied classmate, hits the school team’s star player with a ping pong ball—she’s told to apologize or be banned from competitions. Xiaotang’s only wish? To play on the same court where her dad once won the championship. Looking at Xiaotang’s hidden provincial youth tournament application, Lin finally opens his dusty training log: he trains her with “old-school” methods (like picking up ping pong balls with chopsticks to improve feel), secretly does shoulder rehab, and even swallows his pride to ask his former “arch-enemy” for advice. When Xiaotang steps onto the provincial youth tournament court in a jersey with Lin’s old number, Lin stands in the stands holding his repaired old racket, eyes suddenly wet—turns out, he’s not the one fulfilling Xiaotang’s dream; it’s Xiaotang who’s bringing back the “kid” who once fought for ping pong with sweat and passion.
