Su Xiao, a solitary suspense writer, moves into an old building in the old town to meet her deadline. The neighbor aunt keeps warning her, "Don't open the door at midnight," but she dismisses it as an old woman's quirk. Until three o'clock on a rainy night, urgent knocks shatter the silence—standing outside is Lin Shen, her ex-boyfriend who "died half a year ago," holding her favorite orange candies. She opens the door involuntarily, only to hear Lin Shen's chilling words: "The 'dead man who knocks at midnight' in your uncompleted script is coming for his ending." It turns out her unfinished murder story is quietly dragging reality into the plot, and every door opened is a death warrant handed to the unknown "plot backlash."
