Lin Zhaoyue, a widow in the western town, lost her husband to a bandit leader who killed him for defending the town. She formed an alliance with her three dowry silver hairpins—she turned the hairpin tails into whistles that gather all the widows, orphans, women and children in the town with one blow; melted the bodies into poison-tipped sleeve arrows and taught everyone to hide them in their sleeves for defense; carved the heads into a register, recording the embroideress's sleeping powder skill, the cook's poisonous mushroom recipe, and seven-year-old A Ruan's tree-climbing scouting ability. When the bandit leader returned, Lin Zhaoyue blew the whistle to assemble everyone. The women and children set traps with their 'hairpin weapons': sleeping powder covered the bandits, poisoned soup knocked out the sentries, and A Ruan climbed a tree to shoot down the bandit flag. But the bandit leader captured A Ruan and wanted to destroy the hairpin register—the 'soul' of the alliance! Holding the last sleeve arrow, Lin Zhaoyue bet all the courage of those who had lost their loved ones: can she protect their last home with the alliance of three hairpins?
